In my career, I stove to leave things better than I found them. The Jefferson Street Baptist Chapel became this meca of activity to help the poor. Union Mission went from being a mere homeless shelter to an expansive array of services designed to put an end to it. Both were wildly successful ... and both had their enemies.'
It is hard to watch regression but I have. The Baptists kicked the Chapel out of its building. Union Mission tore itself asunder and continues to do so.
But I left both far better than I found them and that was all that I can do.
My work now is to help people and organizations ... make themselves better. To embrace curiosity. To stop looking backwards at what used to be ... to grab hold of change. These were the principals that make the Chapel and Union Mission were built upon only to have Ass Clowns drag them into the past.
On both Tybee Island where I live ... and throughout the world, this is becoming my work. I am not quite certain where it's taking me ... in fact I'm curious as hell about that ... but I know that I'm going. Because that's where God is.
