Here's to Hopes and Dreams

While I was born a rock-n-roller my Dad was all country!

The very first song I ever learned, and he delighted in my singing, was "Please help me I'm falling" by Hank Cochran. (Here's a link to painful video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DndK5hZBgu0&feature=kp ).

I'd sing it to the top of my lungs in the backseat of the old white "Comet" for Dad and Uncle Bobby and they'd just laugh.

Then I discovered "The Beatles", 50's rock-n-roll and Elvis and never looked back.

Growing up was a never ending battle for radio supremacy with me hitting the button for WSGA while Dad instantly flipping to WEAS.

It was his car so he always won and I got lectures on how Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger" is better than anything John Lennon and Paul McCartney ever thought about doing.

I remember it as an intense hated of the other's music.

Looking back on it today though we found common ground.

Dad became a huge Anne Murray fan when she sang Kenny Loggings songs barefoot on the stage.

And I fell in love with "The Statler Brothers", an old white Gospel Quartet who crossed over into the country mainstream.

This opened the door for me to listen and love Waylon Jennings, Tom T. Hall and the coolest, hippest, country artist ever Johnny Cash.

Sitting on the Beloved Back Deck last night on a warm summer night with the ocean casting salt over the island, I hit Spotify and "The Statler Brothers" reminded me the Class of 57 had its dreams.

It's a haunting, poignant, beautiful recollection of how life turns out better for some than others in spite of the belief that "we'd change the world with our great words and deeds."

It takes me back to fond memories of Dad hitting the radio button for WEAS and Hank Cochran just after I'd hit the one for WSGA for Derek and the Dominos.

Dad's gone but I still have my dreams though "living life every day is never as it seems."

But here's to Dad and each of the Statler Brothers; here's to hopes and dreams that don't die; here's to still being here long after the class I graduated with is gone ...

Here's to us all.

God's Silence

She lost her job, can no longer afford the place she lives and is trying with everything in her not to panic.

Already having suffered through tremendous loss ... deaths and divorces ... hope is hard to hold onto.

With little other choice, she's taking everything one day at a time.

There are people who love her but they can do little more than say so.

More than ever, she's appreciative of every act of kindness shown to her.

And more than ever she believes in God.

Each of her prayers being with the word "Why?" or "Please!"

God remains silent during these times which tests her faith but she doesn't know what else to believe in because Karma doesn't seem to be working out, magic's never happened and other religions don't seem right.

It doesn't take long to weigh few options.

"It all works out the way it's supposed to," she says to anyone who asks because it's better than blaming others or, worse, herself.

So she works in her tiny garden, pulling weeds, talking to flowers and desperately tries to grow more hope.

Staring at the dirt on her hands, she feels the sun shine and pauses to notice it hanging in a deep blue, cloudless sky and feels like crying but doesn't.

Birds sing and she looses herself in their songs.

Perhaps a minute later, though it could have been thirty, she's still sitting beside the tiny garden where there's nothing else for her to do.

"I just don't understand," she says out loud. "Please let it work out somehow!"

And the sun shines.

The birds sing.

God remains silent.

And she tastes the salt water rolling down her face.

What Good Are You?

I remember watching President Kennedy's funeral and Jack Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald.

When Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed my Dad brought home a pamphlet titled "The Three greatest men in History". On the cover was Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln and Dr. King.

I can still picture Robert Kennedy lying on the floor in a puddle of blood when he was shot several months later.

Howard Cosell told me John Lennon was murdered as I watched Monday Night Football.

On September 11, I was in the dining room where a television showed the planes crashing into the twin towers trying to calm down mentally ill people who were scared to death they were next.

More than I care to remember, I've witnessed people do cruel things to others with no care at all.

I've seen tsunamis, Hurricanes, Tornados, Flash Floods and all manners of weather kill people.

I've been inside crack houses trying to woo people out, held the hands of men dying from AIDS, was vilified for trying to help the mentally ill and have received enough "Hate Mail" to last the rest of my life.

I've seen all manner of evil ... not just spoken words ... but hideous actions.

"We didn't start the fire," Billy Joel reminds us.

It's been burning since Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden.

Yet I still believe good always trumps evil, light drives away darkness, kindness is more powerful than cruelty and love reigns supreme.

I believe in Karma and eventually terrible things happen to bad people. Those struggling to do good things are eventually blessed with goodness.

I believe in second chances, Angels and most everyone I meet.

I seen Heaven and I've seen Hell in this life.

I don't believe we wait until death comes to experience either.

Life has an incredible ability to keep making itself over. I'm a much different person than I was a decade ago.  I'm calmer, happier, very much in love, content and at peace with most everything I've done so far.  I've been born again, reincarnated and evolved from what I was before.

I don't care what people say about my beliefs. I've heard it all before anyway. These things are the core of who I am now and I'm sure as hell not going backwards.

No, we didn't start the fire but I can use it for good things or for bad.

I choose good.

It's time to invest in you!

"I enjoyed the session tonight," reads the email.

"Good job!" the instant message proclaims.

Last evening, sitting on the back deck on a chilly evening beside a roaring fire, I taught a class on writing. It's the initial session in the form of a teleseminar. Initially, it's a lot of story telling on my part with a great deal of personal introspection on theirs. First we discover the story demanding to be released, meet the writer inside and finally slide into the act of crafting words.

Immediately after the class, I began receiving messages. The instant gratification of getting it right makes anyone feel good.

I certainly did and today I still do.

My whole life, I've helped others sort through problems, overcome barriers, discover who they really should be, harness hope and make life better than what it had been. Through the wonderful worlds of technology I now work with people throughout the world who are committed to making their life better NOW!

That's a pretty bold statement but if you boil down a 30 year career, that's exactly what I've done.

The biggest discovery for me has been people's inabilities to believe in themselves!

Refusing to spend money on YOU to grow and be better is crazy! Forever putting off investments in YOURSELF until later means most never get around to it. We imprison our own dreams, calling it self-sacrifice for those we love. We give everything to the kids, our parents, the church and often a collection of friends who don't return much anything in-kind.

IT'S JUST INSANE!

We have this one life to make the most of and there's no day but today to believe in, and  invest in, YOU!

My job is to help you understand this so you can start living the life you want now!

Today I challenge you to make an investment in yourself. Take some extra time for you just because you deserve it dammit! Treat yourself to something you enjoy. Indulge yourself in one thing today!

Because no one else will.

When all's said and done, you are the only one who can get to the life you want to have so make a tiny investment in that now! And learn how to keep investing in you! That's the only way to get away from messes surrounding us and to the glories of who you really are!

Growing Hope

Reading the back cover of my new book Sandy Bottoms & Duct Taped Hearts, she says I'm a "Renegade beach bum at heart," and laughs.

Sipping coffee I nod enjoying the moment.

A twenty-something blond waitress, she's recently returned to school and struggles with the structured, regimented bureaucracy that is American education.

Suddenly serious she reads I "spent 30 years in the non-profit world successfully fighting homelessness, AIDS, mental health, substance abuse, health care and government bureaucracy."

"Where did you do these things?"

"Here," I absentmindedly shrug.

"What did you do?" she presses.

"Oh I was at Union Mission," I mumble.

Her eyes grow wide. "Grace House? Phoenix Place? The Starfish Café? The freaking J. C. Lewis Health Center! You did those things?"

"I used to do those things," I explain.

She places the book in front of me saying, "I want to buy but a book I don't have any money right now."

I smile nodding my head. I wish I could give them away but I can't.

Sarah and I are hard at work starting new things taking our experiences and life lessons helping others grow hope in their lives. The book is one way though there are topical classes, workshops, speeches and personal coaching too.

Starting new things is hard work. Creating something out of our experiences and life lessons seems daunting. We know everything's going to work because we have faith, passion and love for what we're doing. Actually it's already working because people tell us how they've benefitting. Hope has grown in specific and concrete ways and they're trying their own new things!

Besides as the saying goes, "Don't fear failure so much that you refuse to try new things. The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have ... might have ... should have" (Louis Boone).

"Hey," she says interrupting these thoughts, "I got the money. Can I buy a book now?"

Greedily she grabs it throwing bills on the table with a smile making a choice to instantly invest in herself.

"Thank you," I say watching her walk away towards her own new thing.

You're Rich too!

"I'm so broke," he says with a smile taking the seat across from me.

"I've got to pay the rent," he continues waving a white envelope in the air. "I'm only $100 shy."

His landlord strolls to the outside table where we're sitting. She's elderly with wild white hair and hugs me and then him.

Handing her the envelope he explains, "I still owe you $100 from last month and I'm a $100 shy for this month too but I'll make it up when I get well."

Flashing a Cheshire smile she nods, "It's OK. How're you feeling?"

He smiles and holds up his cane. "Better everyday."

She nods and looks at me. "How's your mother?"

A thousand years ago they'd worked together.

"She's great," I reply. "I was with her over the weekend."

"Good, you tell her I said hello," as she turns back to him, "and you take care of yourself."

She leaves us alone sitting at the plastic table under an umbrella with a book and my papers spread over it. A basket of shrimp arrives and I offer him some but he declines saying he has to leave.

Standing, he smiles as we embrace and he hobbles away.

I sigh as I sit back down.

"Blessed are the poor for everything God has will be yours," Jesus said and it makes me wonder.

No longer hungry, I push the basket away and take a sip of wine. The sun rains warmth down on me as I stick my bare feet in a chair looking at the deep blue sky. An ocean breeze blows cool from the north as I take my sunglasses off and rub my eyes trying not to think with my head but with my heart.

A couple enters the patio ordering Bloody Mary's and steamed oysters. Sad country music plays from speakers suspended overhead. The bartender sticks his head out and gives me a thumbs up and I nod to let him know I'm fine.

"Blessed are the poor ... MY ASS!" erupts from my heart. "Poor sucks!"

A flock of seagulls squawk circling overhead admiring the shrimp basket. The couple slurp oysters. All is calm. All is bright.

Then my head kicks in responding to my heart. "Blessed are the kind ... because they find kindness" and it makes me wonder about Karma.

A beer commercial comes on the television suspended overhead. The sound is turned off but I watch the "most interesting man in the world" do fabulous things before topping it off with a Dos Equis beer. I stare at it.

I know what it's like to be broke. I've been poor and been surrounded by others poorer than me. I've witnessed incredible acts of kindness and horrible indifference ... often by the most righteous of people. I've been abandoned and been found again too so I pause, tap my chest and blow a kiss to Sarah whose spending the day off island. I ponder these things and take another sip of wine.

A seagull flies down and steals a shrimp.

Grabbing my I-phone I update my status. "Sometimes God kidnaps your day. Like today. You know that Beer commercial with the most interesting man in the world. That's bullshit! It's me."

The bartender changes the radio station and "The Beatles" preach "Baby you're a rich man too."

Surviving hammers and nails

This is a random progression of thought.

Crosby, Stills & Nash singing "4 + 20" which make me wonder what I was doing 24 years ago.

Not especially good at math, I hit the calculator App on the I-phone and subtract 24 from 57 and it's 33.

That's Jesus age was when he was crucified.

OUCH!

Since that first one, his ass has been nailed to a cross virtually every day somewhere but especially in church and Congress.

On the other hand, I've only been crucified a few times. None were pleasant and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody though it is great when you survive.

The scars don't matter.

The life does.

Sitting here at 57, wishing like hell I could be 33 again because my beautiful wife Sarah would be three years older than me and I would like that.

It would buy us more time.

But it is what it is.

It took her one crucifixion and me two to get us to where we are.

I wouldn't trade it.

I'm pretty sure she wouldn't either though crucifixions make you not take much anything for granted when you survive.

It's been a tough week full of good days and bad days and going half mad days. Lots of people with hammers and nails have been walking around ... mostly corporate leaders, politicians, FOX News and clergy ...  but so far we've skirted them.

We're still alive and kicking!

Hell! We're flat out enjoying!

You are too if you're on the right side of the dirt!

So take the moment and enjoy the hell out of yourself!

You've survived your share of crucifixions just like I have.

It's best to focus on what's next because what was ... hurt like hell.

It's a time of celebration!

I'm starting by proving to Sarah that resurrection has many meanings ... many times ... many ways ... and is repetitive.

Life is good!

Go do good things!

Especially for yourself!

Good Karma beats the bad stuff

I believe in Karma.

What goes around comes around. We reap what we sow. Violence begets violence but doing good things make things good.

In my life, I've done lot's of good and sure enough lot's of good came my way.

I've also did some bad things and have had my fair share of bad happen that I never want to experience again.

For a while, things got completely out of whack! Apparently, I'd used up all the good I've done because they ran out. Bad things took over.  Lots of bad things!

Every morning I'd get up and try my best to be helpful to the world ... even if it just meant petting Goddess my dog. Yet ... bad things kept right on happening, piling up on me and days got worse.

I couldn't figure it out and asked God, "Hey! What did I do? This isn't right!"

God never said anything back.

Then ... I don't know if God finally took pity on me or if good Karma finally decides to come back ... things started getting better. A small group of good friends replaced thousands of shitty ones. I began to feel better. Sarah came home. A rich life that crashed and burned leaving me empty was suddenly full again!

It's a whole new world!

It's like being reincarnated or born-again or coming back the dead.

Everything's not perfect but ... it's mostly perfect and I now ask myself, "How in the hell did I do that other stuff for so long? That was crazy! This is fuckin' A!"

Imagine my surprise yesterday as I left lunch with good friends at "Spanky's South Side" only to run smack into two of the really bad Karma people in my life. One had just been through an orchestrated dismissal ... meaning she was fired ... while the other continues to slither his way through other people's misfortunes.

"I left something for Sarah," she said which immediately pissed me off."

"Congratulations on your transition," I reply filling with anger.

The snake tries to make lite of it. They're down and I'm up. It's time for revenge and it's starting to taste sweet when a loving arm comes from nowhere and elopes my neck just as I'm catching fire.

"C'mon Pal," my friend Ryan says in his Savannah Irish brogue, "you ain't got time for bullshit!" and he pulls me away from bad Karma.

Outside, its stopped raining and the sun's peaking through clouds though Ryan still has his arm around my neck. Then he burst out laughing which makes me giggle. Slapping me on the back he strolls away and I look back inside at the bad Karma just sitting there.

What goes around has indeed come around.

It almost sucked me in again but ... there are just too many good things in my life right now.

If you're unfortunate enough to be on the down hill ride of the Karma roller coaster, I want you to get ready.

Keep being kind to yourself as best you can. Hold on to the good friends and let the shallow ones go.  Embrace reincarnation and be born again. Fuck the past!

Enjoy the ride back to the top.

Wave when you see me there.

The End of the Rainbow

What happens when you get to the end of the rainbow?

I seem to find myself here.

A few short years ago, life was lived at a crazy, fast pace, struggle to get everything done on an ever growing list. Every answer begat two questions. Each accomplishment exposed new needs. Satisfaction was measured in seconds. Pressure weighed heavy on my shoulders. Sadness grew in my heart. Somehow, as I was changing the world it was passing me by ... I was just busy to notice.

Now, a cool breeze blows from the north on a warm island day. A canopy of purple clouds hang low over the ocean though directly over my head is deep blue sky with white puffy clouds dancing across it. Sitting here, contemplating the day, I wait on it to unveil itself to me rather than forcing my will on what should come.

A rainbow suddenly appears though there is no hint of rain.

It hangs above Fran's "Thousand Shades of Green" as I stare at it asking unanswerable questions.

"How in the hell is that happening?"

"Is this a sign?"

"God? You talking to me?"

A squirrel darts across the lines in the trees and the sun rises above the Palm Tree with the oyster face, coconut bra and grass skirt. The rainbow disappears just as suddenly as it appeared.

Not knowing what to make of it, and since I'm sitting in front of my open laptop, I Google "Rainbow Facts" and read the following ...

"The idea that a pot of gold can be found at the rainbow's end originated somewhere in old Europe. In Silesia, an obscure area of eastern Europe it was said that the Angels put the gold there and that only a nude man could obtain the prize."

Quickly jumping up, I drop the black running shorts I'm wearing and wait in anticipation.

 Nothing happens.

"Shit," I mutter and sit back down.

The sun disappears behind a white puffy cloud as the breeze picks up. A branch falls from the Palm Tree. The squirrel disappears as the choir of cicada burst into Hymns. Swiveling the chair, I prop my feet on the railing of the Beloved Back Deck wondering what all of this means.

The computer burbs beeps of messages, notifications and reminders in stark contrast to life at the rainbow's end.

Then the door opens and Sarah walks in.

God Talking ... Stop Working!

My friend Erin has it all figured out. As she has an operation for cancer today, this is her plan.

"I'll think of you all as I fall asleep. I'm going to try to space travel to keep myself busy during the surgery. Don't be surprised if you hear me whisper in your ear!"

My heart and eyes completely fill as I read this. I explode with emotions of every kind! Instantly, I am completely ALIVE! Just as instantly, my heart flies to a Chicago hospital where she's waiting as she writes last messages to her team and the people who love her.

I need a moment.

There is so much to do today. I didn't get it all done yesterday. I've got to catch up! Now I'm preoccupied and have to get my focus back.

Standing, I face the ocean, feel the sun on my face, the sea breeze kisses my skin and purple clouds dance in a deep blue sky. I send Erin prayer, good Karma and love.

Sitting back down, I open the first email which is a daily musing from my favorite author Frederick Buechner and read ...

"IN THE YEAR 1831, it seems, this church was repaired and several new additions were made. One of them was a new steeple with a bell in it, and once it was set in place and painted, apparently, an extraordinary event took place. "When the steeple was added," Howard Mudgett writes in his history, "one agile Lyman Woodard stood on his head in the belfry with his feet toward Heaven."

It makes me laugh.

A steeple is put on a church and Lyman Woodard, whoever that is, climbs on top and stands on his head.

What a crazy, wonderful, idiotic way to celebrate life!

But then Buechner gets to the heart of the matter, which he does better than anybody, and why he's my favorite. He writes ...

"If the Lord is indeed our shepherd, then everything goes topsy-turvy. Losing becomes finding and crying becomes laughing. The last become first and the weak become strong. Instead of life being done in by death in the end as we always supposed, death is done in finally by life in the end. If the Lord is our host at the great feast, then the sky is the limit (The Clowns in the Belfry)."

I burst into tears again and my heart is absolutely full.

Who can work?

Powerful things are taking place.

God is on the move.

I've got to get ready!

I don't want to miss it!

As I feel a tickle in my ear.

Defining Monday

In the decades I worked in corporate homelessness, I attacked Mondays with a vengeance. I hated the bastard. I took weekends to formulate my plans and hit the ground running as soon as Sunday ended and the sun came up. I kicked Monday's ass!

Then I ran out of gas.

Monday started winning and it paid me back in full.

I've got scars to prove it.

I started to hate Monday as soon as Friday rolled around. A time for celebration turned into the beginning of three days of dread. Sunday evenings dripped sadness and when the sun rose, I was bone weary, drug myself out of bed and sleep walked through the day.

So for a few years, Monday totally dominated, sucking the joy out of me, making me fake happiness, professionalism and enthusiasm.

I didn't recognize it at the time but I was really telling myself that I should be doing something else.

I was too stubborn ... too stupid ... to listen to me so I kept at it and things just got worse.

Depending on how I look at it, either I crashed and burned ... or ... God intervened.

It really does depend on how we choose to look at things.

I left that world and then I didn't know what to do with Monday. Suddenly, it was like every other day ... time to enjoy and make something out of ... something to endure.

It was up to me.

Now, Monday's are a quiet time. I start them slowly. We're like dancers, uncertain of how to begin, tentatively placing one hand in the other before slipping into a rhythm. The work is every bit as intense and demanding but I'm doing things I love again. And I'm doing them with the person I love.

It's what defines the Monday. It's what defines every day.

If you're doing what you love ... with those you love ... it's going to be a good day.

But if you're not, then Mondays are horrible.

Just like every other day.

It's up to you.

Why I Try

I try.

And I try.

And I try ...

But I can't get no satisfaction!

It is true.

Nobody's satisfied for very long.

I'm sailing through a day and everything feels good, pieces are falling into place and all of that good Karma I've sent out is coming back. I can almost taste how good everything's becoming. One foot is about to hit pay dirt in the Promised Land.

Then something stupid happens.

Something is said that hits me as just plain wrong. The bad dream that kept me awake at night is suddenly real in the daylight. Worries take center stage. My worst fears slam into the good feelings, knocking pieces out of place and it's suddenly raining bad Karma.

"What in the hell just happened?" I say out loud.

There's no one to hear it, except for me.

Or maybe its one of the basic of prayers and I'm asking God to explain why everything just went to shit?

God doesn't reply though while I stand there holding a suddenly empty bag.

Emotion wells out of nowhere and I'm suddenly wiping salt water in my eyes, a dry lump grows in my throat and I can literally feel my heart breaking. An indignant sense of injustice erupts and overwhelms me.

Let's be honest, this happens with far more regularity than those wonderful moments when we're satisfied, happy, content and know without the slightest conviction how much love we have.

So we try ... and we try ... and we try ... but just can't get no damn satisfaction.

This is where faith comes into the picture.

I just have to keep believing.

She still loves me when I'm completely unlovely or unloving back. This idea we've been working so hard on, for so very long, is going to be successful.  These hard times will eventually be replaced and everything's gonna be alright. Demons will give way to Angels and bright sunshine casts out all darkness. Good again trumps the bad.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen."

Yep.

So I keep trying ... and I try ... and I try.

After the Deluge

The sun shines through the branches of the Palm Tree with the oyster face, the coconut bra and the grass skirt.

Wetness drips from the red, pink, purple, orange blooms of the plants on the beloved back deck.

God has painted a watercolor sky of a brilliant blue background with splashes of white.

The breeze off the ocean is slight and the branches of the Palm Trees sway in a silent rhythm only they can hear.

Puddles are scattered throughout the yard and the streets of the island.

It is warm again after days on end of rain and cool winds uncommon for this time of year.

The house felt like an Ark we were trapped inside bringing a gloominess to the days.

But no more.

The choirs of cicada and birds are singing Hosannas, squirrels dance in trees and dragonflies bring good tidings of great joy. A hummingbird darts to the hanging blossoms becoming one with it before magically disappearing. In the distance there is the movement of life as people are outside again.

The world has been baptized again and it has been gifted this glorious beginning.

I sit alone in God's majestic Cathedral, quiet and appreciative, holy and humble, full of hope for the day. The dreariness has been washed away and joy is ours for the taking if take our time to find it.

The choir of cicada build to a powerful crescendo and I concentrate on the beauty of their voices. A lone bird sings solo.

So this is the day that the Lord has made.

Let's rejoice and be glad in it even if just for a little while.

Off the well worn roads

I seem to be getting further and further from life's well traveled roads.

Sometimes I'm a little shocked at the distance between my life and societal norms.

My career path did a U-turn, the days of being constantly available to everyone else ended, and I took time to indulge me. "I don't go to church and I don't cut my hair" and I rarely think about the way it used to be.

Were my financial advisor, minister, Guardian Angel or parole officer to conduct a SWOT analysis of me, they would likely scream in unison, "Just what in God's name are you doing?"

My answer would likely be, "Beats the hell out of me!"

Honestly though, the answer is two fold. First, everything I've lived through so far has been to get me to this point and, second, I'm not always sure where I'm going but there's certainly no going back.

The question makes me feel OK because what I'm doing these days is entirely in God's name.

My faith journey is the biggest, baddest, freaking scare-the-living-daylights out of you Roller Coaster ride EVER!

I feel I'm elite company!

Francis of Assisi and Claire, Che Guevara, Frederick Buechner, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Clarence Jordan, Jesus of Nazareth, John, Ringo, Paul and George!

These are my people!

Making it all the more exhilarating and wonderfully frightening is that I have a partner! Sarah dove head first into this faith journey and she's never looks back either!

We're hell on wheels driving recklessly towards the Promised Land.

That's what faith is right?

If it's genuine, to blatantly steal from Guy Sayles (America's greatest minister) "it will move us and we will move with it. The movement is often into unknown places in the heart and mind."

I got that part down!

Sarah and I are definitely in unchartered waters but we're enjoying the hell out of the ride.

Then once we get the hell out, we're really going to settle down and enjoy wherever it is we end up.

Everybody else thinks we should have a better idea of where that is.

We don't.

But we've come this far and we're not going back.

We can see the Promised Land from here.

It's right over there.

Watching Friends Die

I learned yesterday Michael Sullivan died.

That sucks!

We liked each other. He managed the news and I often gave him some.

I'd show up at the TV station for "Live at 6" and we'd sit in his tiny little office and crack jokes or wax crazy philosophy like that in  A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy ... which makes perfect sense if you've been drinking ... which we did on occasion ... on Tybee Island where we both lived ... making it worse was Chicago Bob and Johnny O were part of this circle meaning we were never quite sure which Galaxy we were actually hitchhiking to or from.

We also serious stuff together and he was always supportive of anything I was doing.

Mostly though, I'd stroll to the Pier when Dean still ran it for The Bored Meeting with Johnny O, Chicago Bob, Whitely Reynolds, Trolley Joe, O Johnny (not to be confused with Johnny O) and Michael Sullivan.

Sitting on the beloved back deck, I can't help but think to myself and say to God. "Holy Shit! Another friend has died."

Chicago Bob went first. Trolley Joe second. Some have claimed that Whitley died but nobody ever told him so he keeps doing the same stuff.

I get to thinking about it and it starts adding up. My Dad died a few years ago. My sweet cousin Sheri Baker died last year. Rick Donnelly, also my cousin, was the same age as me, left two years ago. Dean who ran the Pier and made us our own VIP section at the bar one night while the Tams played.

It sucks.

But I'm a minister and am supposed to make sense of it somehow. All I know is that life's a gift that none of us asked for yet each of us share. None of us know how long we got it ... or how much we have one another in our lives ... all we know is this is what we got or this is who we've had.

A lot of people are glass-half-empty people (like politicians, preachers and news reporters). They look at the dying that goes on around us and lament, "Well, this just sucks and it's going to happen to me one day too ... AND THAT SUCKS MORE!"

Like Michael, Chicago Bob, Johnny O, O Johnny but most definitely Trolley Joe, I look at it all a little differently.

It's great to be alive today!

It's wonderful having the people I have in my life right now!

It was incredible having the people I've had in my life because I don't know what I would have done without them!

So Michael, the party goes on, just as I know you would have insisted. It's a little different than what it would be if were still here but you're not.

But your spirit is. Your influence remains. Some of the laughter sounds like yours. Some of the crying does too.

Or to put it in the words of the Major Prophets John, Paul, George and Ringo ... "O-blah-dee, O-blah-dah, life goes on! BRAH!"

Summer Squalls

Out of nowhere the wind picks up, quickly changes directions, and the rain hits as if fired from a water cannon. Yet on the horizon, over a dark ocean blanketed by dark clouds, are blue skies basking in sunshine. The sea in the distance is brilliant, shimmering with diamonds. A rainbow hangs in the sky separating the two.

I'm running in the rain.

I want to be in the sunshine but the summer squall sneaks up, never giving warning, and hitting me when I least expect it.

I can see where I want to be, but here I am.

"Shit!" I say out loud.

Others on the beach hug one another standing under tents, biding their time, waiting on it to end.

The fishermen don't care as they cast their worries away, content to eventually haul in hope.

Couples stroll hand in hand, feet in the surf, knowing the wet clothes are soon going to come off anyway back in their rooms. They smile and laugh, oblivious to the reality of it all.

I run on, madly hitting the wheel on my I-Pod searching for something that soothes my soul but nothing seems to fit. I keep hearing the click through my ear buds.

The rainbow grows.

The rains slow to a drizzle.

The brilliant blue sky in the distance comes closer.

Squalls are part of life. We're hit with the unexpected all of the time. Nights we'd planned are wrecked by unanticipated interruptions. Things we desire from others go unrealized. Dreams are smothered by stark realities. The hand of Death reaches up snatching someone we love. God seems to hide behind thick clouds like the sun.

We notice we're standing alone in the dark.

Rain falls on us.

On a warm day, cold winds blow from nowhere or everywhere.

But ... just over there ... where the rainbow is ... the skies are blue, the sun is shinning, the ocean gleams, dolphins jump, the glow of God is peeking over the clouds.

I see it in the rain.

Hope is right over there.

My Award Winning Church

The Church that employed me as its "Professional Christian" had won an award. Miraculously, the Jefferson Street Baptist Chapel had morphed from a broken down, rag tag congregation of little old ladies into a vibrant, diverse, constantly-in-the-news group because we'd turned Sunday School rooms into apartments so homeless people would have a place to live and the Baptismal Pool into a bathtub so they would have a place to bath.

We reasoned that Church buildings are poor examples of stewardship. They sit vacate six days each week and we decided there was a better way to use a building to glorify God.

Having homeless people live in Sunday School rooms brought a life into the building that hadn't been there before. Before long, people who thought it was a cool idea began attending. Attendance went from 5 little old ladies to a couple of hundred.

Now as the Southern Baptist teach us, "Our Lord told us to count his sheep. Not feed them."

And someone in Baptist Corporate Headquarters in Nashville saw that our numbers were the roof!

Of course I was also counting every bath the homeless guys took as a Baptism and reporting that to sheep counters in Baptist Corporate Headquarters.

We'd received noticed that we were going to receive a trophy for shattering the Kentucky state record for Baptisms in a year AND it would be presented by the President of Kentucky Baptist Convention.

Obviously proud, we decided to spruce things up before they arrived on Sunday.

The building looked a little lived in and it needed painting. A group of church volunteers assembled and worked all Saturday to finish. Late in the day everyone was tired and ready to be finished. Besides we all wanted to be ready for Sunday morning trophy presentation.

So Bill Berry, not the former drummer for REM but the other one, "Brothers and sisters in Christ. Go home. There's only one wall left. I'll finish it."

We protested but he remained adamant. So we left.

Everything was perfect as I waited for the Baptist Ayatollah. The sanctuary was packed with proud members who I heard laughing and celebrating in anticipation of our award. When the Ayatollah arrived I proudly led him into the church.

His face went white.

In bold red letters on one wall of the sanctuary, Bill had painted the words "JESUS SHAVES!"

We never did get the award but we had one hell of a celebration.

Finding Hope Again

Tears welled in the beady eyes of the tiny bald homeless man who had just burst into the kitchen in the basement of the church where I was cooking. Turning from the sausage gravy I was making for the hundred or so homeless people who were waiting for breakfast, he went to speak but only a sob came out.

"It's ... it's ...," he tried to say but couldn't so he grabbed my hand pulling me up the stars and out into the street. Dragging me along we went half-a-block and he stopped pointing at the open door of a two story shotgun house. No one lived downstairs save the homeless men who drank and slept there.

Upstairs was occupied by Florence, an old tiny mean woman who called me "Mr. Mike" in a sweet little girl's voice when she wanted something and most everything else when she didn't. She let the homeless men live there so anyone wanting her would have to get through them first.

The little man covered his mouth with his hands and tears flowed freely down his weather beaten face. Walking passed the trash and empty bottles to the stairs I climbed up and her door was open. I called but no one answered so I went in and there she was, laying on the bed, arms up over her face but feet still on the floor. She must have died as soon as she sat down.

Back outside, I grabbed Sonny and drug him back to the church. After calling the Police, I sat down with him, focusing on the living rather than the dead.

"Hey Sonny," I said with my hands on his knees. "You're going to be OK. Me and the boys are going to stick with you."

And we did. My core homeless friends and I adopted Sonny, making him one of our own. By the time I left Louisville, he was no longer homeless, worked at the Church and at a Bar down the street, dying several years later clean and sober.

Working in Savannah, I got the call that Christine's 17 year old son had taken his own life. Immediately I drove to her house in the islands where she sat on the sofa, staring into space and paying no attention to those offering comfort. Her eyes locked mine when I opened the door and her pain erupted as I held her.

I was the minister at his funeral and his classmates spoke and laughed of the wonderful times they'd had with him trying to celebrate a life rather than face a death. Christine sat without moving, staring straight ahead, crossing her thumbs over and over, completely oblivious to the things taking place around her.

Afterwards, we had long talks together. She had lots of questions though I didn't have many answers so we'd sit silently. Eventually she returned to work, giving twice the love to her remaining son.

I've known and still watch lots of people living in desperate situations ... trapped in a marriage they don't want ... a job that takes their life away while they're still alive ... acting as caregivers for parents, spouses or children who can't care for themselves ... hiding their pain rather than working through it ... longing for a different life but with no real hope it'll ever happen.

Too many lose hope. You can't have faith without hope and without faith, life has no assurance and little if any conviction.

When people lose hope they become lonely, regardless of how many people they're around.

Throughout my life, I've worked to help folks rediscover their hope which is best done in groups. I've watched the homeless be raised from the dead to achieve wonderful lives, people dying with AIDS live happily and fulfilled, abandoned people form communities and the unlovely be loved.

I know, with absolute conviction, with everything within me, that pain can be worked through, hope can be recovered, Chains ... self-shackled or otherwise ... can be broken and everyone can live how and where they want!

That's why I've decided to offer group hope opportunities. It's what I've always done and have a track record of  helping people hope again, which leads to a conviction which leads to living again! Especially living the way you've always wanted to live!
