Winning the Game

He was always waiting when I got home from work, baseball glove on his knee and bat in his hand.

After quickly changing clothes we go to the back yard for "the game."

I pitch and he hits.

He pitches and I hit.

We both do running commentary as we play, often mocking the other.

It is not an idyllic example of a Father and Son playing backyard baseball ... it is cut throat competition ... and we love it.

Later, the competition turned from games to books ... who's read what first ... and whether or not we've exhausted a subject before the other.

Then it was music and to this day we've forever sharing songs and artists we discover before the other.

It got a little crazy.

I got divorced ... he got divorced.

I inherited little girls when I married the love of my life and then ... he did too.

But now he's done something I'm never going to match, much less exceed.

My son was awarded his Ph.D.

It gives me pause.

You want your kids to do better than you did but when it happens it's astounding.

Making it better is, to date there's only one boy in our family ... five girls!

But soon there's going to be two!

The Doctor and his Misses are having a Prodigy.

I can't top that so I won't even try.

Congratulations Jeremy.

Enjoy Everything.
