Slurps from the Past

Maddie, the 14 year old, slurps her coffee.

Not to be confused with sipping, slurping involves loud sucking noises which early in the morning ... or at dinner with a glass of sweet tea ... almost break the sound barrier!

Her grandfather does too.

In their New York City apartment, Sarah and I lay on the air mattress in the Living Room as he slurps his coffee in the tiny dining room making noises that make fresh flowers wilt.

At some point during unnatural noises, Maddie and Sarah's Dad raise my Granddaddy Carver from the dead.

Suddenly, I'm a 9 year old standing beside him in the kitchen in the house in Pooler as he pours coffee from his cup into his saucer and slurps it into his mouth.

I haven't thought of it in years.

Honestly it's not worth remembering ... an old man pouring coffee in a saucer and make loud noises as he slurps it up.

Yet ... it suddenly means everything to man just shy of 60.

Maddie brought my Granddaddy to breakfast this morning.

God I still miss him!

It was great to have a moment this morning when he's as alive as he ever was!

As he still is.

I have to think of a way to thank Maddie.

When she's not being so loud.
