Hitting Mom In the Face

"Mom, remember when Dad was hitting you in the face, Che asks, laying her head in Sarah's lap.

All of the parents watching 4 year old soccer on the sidelines beside us stop watching the game to stare at us.

"What?" we both exclaim.

"When we all got a gold medal before," she explains, holding the ribbon of her latest trophy.

The team received participation medals from the YMCA for completing first year soccer where the goal is to "RUN THE OTHER WAY!" like the coach repeatedly screams to the team.

We laugh, having no idea what she's talking about.

The other parents nervously laugh with us.

Later, at home, Sarah and Che disappear in the bedroom looking for something and, after a while, I hear laughter.

Sarah wanders out smiling and tosses a round decoration on the table where I sit.

A few years ago, at the Tybee Critz Run, Mother and Daughter were presented medals to the participants and if you study it, you can plainly see Dad hitting Mom in the face,
