Sarah asks if I have enough left in me to take on more foster puppies.
"Hell Yeah," I answer, completely unsure.
We've fostered and placed 10 puppies in a year, as a diversion to cancer, and much needed infusions of love and energy into our home.
But Che started having trouble saying goodbye when it was time for them to go, I was out of energy and Sarah needed a break.
So we stopped and everyone rested, until Sarah suddenly knows it's time for new puppies.
Then the funniest thing happens.
Daughter Laurel, and her finance Rob, run Mythological Dogs, rescuing dogs from euthanasia and find them new homes via social media (check them out at IG
They're in Miami working with Sgt. Canines when Laurel sends Sarah a photo of a dog.
"I want him," Sarah says, knowing this is the exact dog that we need.
Wilbur is a genetic disaster, horribly bred and abused, and recommended to be put down because there's simply too much wrong with him. His ears and tail are cut off for no apparent reason.
"We'll never be able to tell if he likes anything," Cassidy points out after examining where his tail should be.
"He's perfect," Sarah says.
So ugly that he's cute, Wilbur looks like he might topple over any second because his head and chest are so big, and his torso and hind legs are next to nothing.
His cleft lip leaves him with a permanent scowl, with one very pronounced tooth showing. He should have been dead even without euthanasia, but he somehow survives.
Lainey's welcomed him to the family with complete indifference.
Sarah and Wilbur have their own Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/perfectlywilbur?igsh=MXEyN3IwN2JobTgzOA== if you want to keep up with our new adventures.
Maybe we helped save Wilbur's life but it seems he's giving us every bit as much, boosting our spirits as we nurse him back to health and feeling better because of it.
Either way, we stand here now on this side of the Rainbow Bridge, not ready to cross it quite yet, squeezing every bit of the living out of dying that's possible, with Wilbur's help.

My Celebration of Life delightfully lingers but is coming to an end. Help me make sure Sarah and Che will be fine without me.
Please consider being part of their future at https://gofund.me/ffda4f4b
